i’m about to get hippie on you all. plugin air fresheners (and tons of other stuff) have something called VOC in them. VOC stands for “volatile organic compounds” and they are highly toxic. they are chemicals with a low boiling point.

VOC cause all sorts of problems in your body: infertility (some of you may like that!), headaches, nervous system disorders, memory loss and cancer for both your pet and you…. lots of things.

i was bummed when i learned about this and unplugged mine. being a packrat i couldn’t bring myself to toss it out and thought, maybe i’ll just plug it in for the holidays and poison my loved ones only a few times a year.

then i had a bright idea:
replace the bad stuff with good stuff: essential oils, which are awesome for you and, sometimes a lot cheaper than the liquid cancer bath and body works sells.

It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten into the flow of my work. The last time I was this devoted to my craft was when I was in graduate school, and before summer began, I decided to revisit the practice of journaling. I don’t quite know how or why I grew away from the practice of making art daily, but I felt that if I was going to be the “Art Major” teacher then I would have to practice what I preach. The only rule I gave myself was that I had to give my art at least five minutes a day in order for it to “count” as work, then I would track it in a calendar in the front of my small sketchbook—a small part of ritual that was borrowed from Austin Kleon’s Steal Like an Artist. This helped to spurn me onward with my practice.

Some days it felt only like practice, but that little chain of dates in the front my sketchbook encouraged me into action. It not only noted the days I worked but also the days I couldn’t give time to my art-making—and those empty boxes still sting a little bit. I can hear my inner teacher asking: “You couldn’t find five minutes that day?”. On those early days when I wasn’t that into it, I would glance at the clock and look for an end to those five minutes as I crudely marked on the pages—I was slogging through half-hearted attempts just so I could count that day. Eventually, however, and for the most part, that clock-watching slipped away and five minutes easily turned to 45 minutes.

All of my filters slipped away—anything was up for grabs. If I wanted to draw it, it got drawn. If I didn’t know what to do, I’d copy another’s work or I grabbed the closest material and just started marking. Recently, I have been looking at turn of the century painters like JC Leyendecker, NC Wyeth, John Singer Sargent, Charles Demuth along with landscape painter Wolf Khan and Abstract Expressionist Willem DeKoonig. I enjoy each of them and many more artists for different reasons, but creating art consistently allowed me to get excited and mimic others’ processes in ways that simple enjoyment in viewing their work never allow.

Putting art-making as a priority (albeit, only a 5-minute priority, on some days) forced me to look. It forced me to ask “what if?” Eventually, I could quiet my mind without effort, give myself permission to play, and occasionally let my work settle before revisiting it or deciding to call that piece finished and taking a shot at something new.
